Tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill's former home chain-sawed

Glen Martin / SF Chronicle 28nov00

An environmental saga that transfixed the world took an ugly turn yesterday when it was revealed that Luna, a 1,000-year-old redwood that was home for two years to tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill, has suffered a deep chain-saw cut that could prove fatal.

No suspect for the act of vandalism has been identified, but authorities say an investigation is continuing.

The giant Humboldt County tree was protected under an agreement reached with Pacific Lumber Co. last year when Hill ended her protest. The company agreed to preserve Luna and a 200-foot buffer zone in exchange for a $50,000 payment from Hill and her legion of supporters.

In a statement issued yesterday by the Circle of Life Foundation, an organization Hill helped establish, she condemned the "vicious attack" on Luna.

"I feel this . . . as surely as if the chain saw was going through me," she said. "Words cannot express the deep sorrow I'm feeling, but I am as committed as ever to do everything in my power to protect Luna and the remaining ancient forests."

Reached by phone yesterday at her grandfather's house in Fairhope, Ala., Hill said she was too over whelmed to elaborate. "I just don't really feel like talking," said Hill haltingly. "I'm just trying to work through what is going on."

The gash to the 200-foot-tall redwood was discovered Saturday by one of Hill's supporters. Observers at the scene said the cut measured 32 inches deep and 19 feet around the base, somewhat less than half the circumference of the tree.

Fresh sawdust at the scene and the precise placement of the cut indicates that the vandalism occurred within the last week by someone adept at sawing large trees, authorities said.

A timber faller who examined Luna yesterday said no logger in the course of his work would climb a tree that had endured such a cut, because the tree could fall at any time -- particularly in a high wind.

It remains unclear whether anything can be done to save the redwood.

INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ATTENTION

Hill climbed Luna in 1997 as a protest to the logging of ancient redwood trees by Pacific Lumber, a timber company owned by Texas financier Charles Hurwitz. She stayed in the tree for two years, drawing international media attention from her treetop perch.

By the time Hill descended on Dec. 10, 1999, she had become a global cause celebrity -- and had essentially forced an agreement with Pacific Lumber that permanently protected the tree and a buffer zone.

The pact seemed to signal a truce in the North Coast's ferocious timber wars. And to a certain degree, at least, that detente was holding yesterday, with representatives of Pacific Lumber expressing sorrow and anger at the vandalism.

"This is absolutely terrible," said Mary Bullwinkel, a Pacific Lumber spokeswoman. "We want to see whoever is responsible fully prosecuted. We just hope the investigation will find the guilty party."

Speaking by cell phone yesterday from Luna's base, Herb Schwartz, an attorney for Sanctuary Forest, a nonprofit group that oversees the tree and its buffer zone, said he was dispirited by the attack.

EVERYONE 'VERY SICKENED'  -

Julia Butterfly Hill ProductionClips activist of the year 1999

"I'm normally an optimist," said Schwartz, ''but I have this very sinking feeling. It's like when something you don't want to happen happens anyway, and you just feel like you're losing control.

"It's like you're saying 'My God, how can I stop it?' But you can't stop it.

I'm up here with representatives from Pacific Lumber and the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department, and everyone is very sickened."

Schwartz said that he hoped Luna could be saved, but that no answers would be forthcoming until professional arborists were consulted.

"The cut won't necessarily kill the tree outright," said Schwartz, "but it makes it really vulnerable to toppling, particularly in a big windstorm."

The ridge that Luna sits on is southwest of the community of Scotia, an area that frequently receives heavy winds, particularly during winter storms. In a book Hill wrote about her tree-sitting experience, she described almost being blown out of Luna's canopy by gale-force gusts.

There is no evidence that timber industry workers are responsible for the act, authorities emphasized. But lingering local resentment over the Luna accord and an earlier pact that protected the nearby Headwaters Forest, a 7, 500-acre grove of ancient redwoods, has engendered suspicion among some environmentalists.

BIG CHAIN SAWS INDICATED

"It takes big chain saws and containers of gas and oil to do something like this, and it isn't easy to get up there," said Sharon Duggan, an attorney who helped negotiate the agreement that protected Luna. "Loggers know that.

"The question comes down to who did it. I'm not saying Pacific Lumber or their agents did it, but there are a lot of questions left to be answered. There's a lot of concern that the agreement might have been breached. Pacific Lumber controls access to Luna -- their lands surround it."

Pacific Lumber doesn't own Luna or the adjacent buffer zone and is therefore not directly responsible for the tree, Bullwinkel observed. "Also, people trespass our lands constantly," she said. "We can't stop them all."

At this point, said Schwartz, a meticulous investigation is essential.

"It's complete speculation right now trying to ascertain if the (guilty party) was a professional or an amateur," he said. "I couldn't say, and the professional logger who is up here with us couldn't say. That's a determination we're still trying to make.

Note from the Publisher of ProductionClips.com Chris Sanders.

"We will be offering a reward in the amount of $10,000.00 US dollars for information leading to the arrest and incarceration of  the individuals responsible for taking a chainsaw to Luna. This crime was obviously committed by two or more people most likely loggers.  I believe in the activists in the world for we believe in peace. Its was terrible seeing dozens of people that had lost their homes in Stafford.  I remember going to Julia's one year anniversary on Luna hiking the trail with children and families that lost all that they had.  That is why I am compassionate about this issue. We must stop clear-cutting practices.  Did I mention that this mudslide contaminated the water supply and killed thousands of rare and endangered species?  I am certain we will find you men of poor class and your chainsaw and give you what you have coming. Until then I hope you live in constant fear of being discovered just like a tree in the Headwaters Forest."

Stop attacking us at Home!  Look at this - this was a City!  A war was fought here and won by the Pacific Lumber Company and Charles Hurwitz an outcasted Texan who is a champion in the world of deforestation and contamination.  A young girl noticed early on and became the powerful woman known as Julia Butterfly Hill determined to defend the ancient beings of the forest that lived here for over 3,000 years.  She saved what she could by living in a tree named Luna and enlightening the world about what was happening here. These Ancient beings were cut down - so that redwood decks could be built through out America. There are many costs that we pay for our own ignorance as cities are swept away in mudslides across California and Ancient beings are being denied their right to live with us.  Because of this groups have formed among us that are dedicated towards certain issues that protect this heaven that we live in - mother earth! The trees were growing when Jesus lived and I think it is important to show our children that something can live and grow over thousands of years for it connects a life force that lived then and now.
I walked these streets with the children who lost their homes - I feel that it is important to share this issue with you.

Paulownia - The Japanese Kiri tree could be the answer to help
remediate areas where this devastation has happened.

kiri tree  (桐)

It is popular in its native China for reforestation, roadside planting and as an ornamental tree. It grows well in a wide variety of soil types, notably poor ones, but needs a lot of light and does not like a high water table because of this it is perfect for Texas.  Paulownia timber is a pale whitish colored wood with a straight grain.  Its characteristics of rot resistance and a very high ignition point ensures the timber's popularity in the world market. The wood is also important in China, Korea, and Japan for making the soundboards of stringed musical instruments such as the guqin, guzheng, pipa, koto, and kayagum.  In world war II the wood was used in the Japanese Zero aircraft because of its light weight and great strength. The tree is known to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions ten times more than the average tree and also in return produce ten times more oxygen (O2).  It loves toxic waste and can be used to assist in organic remediation throughout the world.

Paulownia is known in Japanese as kiri (桐), specifically referring to P. tomentosa; it is also known as the "princess tree".   It has been known as the Japanese Empress Tree in Japan.  It was once customary to plant a Paulownia tree when a baby girl was born, and then to make it into a dresser as a wedding present when she gets married. It is the badge of the government of Japan (vis-à-vis the chrysanthemum being the Imperial Seal of Japan). It is one of the suits in hanafuda, associated with the month of December. Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia (page 1189; Tokyo: Kodansha, 1993. ISBN 4-06-931098-3) states: The genus was named in honor of Queen Anna Pavlovna of The Netherlands (17951865), daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia to copy the tradition given by the Japanese in honor of the princess. Paulownia fortunei is a fast-growing tree that is grown commercially for the production of hardwood timber.  Paulownia wood is very light, fine-grained, soft, and warp-resistant and is used for chests, boxes, and clogs (geta). The wood is burned to make charcoal for sketching and powder for fireworks, the bark is made into a dye, and the leaves are used in vermicide preparations.

Kiri Trees in Texas

Due to current severe changes in our Earth’s environment, it has become clear that the human race must transform rapidly and do something equally as tremendous in order to maintain a well-balanced existence with our Planet.  One of the most effective and natural methods for detoxifying our Planet comes to us as a magnificent gift from Japan called the Kiri Tree, which is also referred to as the Japanese Empress Tree, and the Paulownia Tree. The benefits of this tree are boundless and amazing. Not only does the Kiri Tree absorb ten times more CO2 than any other tree but also, it soaks up toxicity in the air, dirt, and water and then expels a massive amount of Oxygen.  In fact, the Kiri Tree flourishes and loves toxic soil and water. It is safe to say that it is the fastest growing tree on the planet. When planted from a seed and grown for eight years, it will be the same size as a 40-year-old Oak tree.

These very unique characteristics make the Kiri Tree the perfect tree for Texas. Texas suffers from extremely contaminated soil, air, and water, which has a harmful effect on all of its residents. So, in order to get the Kiri Tree Revolution started in Texas, Chris Sanders and Brittany Turner have begun planting seeds and clones to see which genetics will be the toughest survivors in the Texas climate. This Wonder Tree can help purify Texas and make it Green again! It is such a blessing that the Kiri Tree loves toxicity, lots of sunshine, and will reduce the CO2 levels in our environment.  Since no one has planted Kiri Trees in Texas yet, Chris and Brittany will be taking pictures and documenting all of the activity so that we have the knowledge to help plant these trees all over Texas and eventually all over the United States!

Day One of Sprouting

March 20, 2007

The First Visible Germination

We planted our seeds in Jiffy Peat Pellets that we sat in a water tray.

The seeds are tiny and look like little flakes of skin and are extremely fragile.

Only ten days after we sowed the seeds, we began to notice bright
green little sprouts poking their heads through the Peat Pellets.
We have watered it with a small dose of Miracle Grow mixed ( @ 1/2) in with the water.

We make sure to give the little trees LOTS of Sunshine!

The Paulownia, i.e., kiri was the most popular of Japanese crest motifs. "According to Chinese legend, the mythical phoenix... alights only in the branches of the Paulownia tree when it comes to earth and eats only the seed of the bamboo."

"As an explicitly imperial crest, the Paulownia ranks only slightly behind the chrysanthemum, and both are usually taken as the dual emblems of the Japanese throne." In the early 13th century the emperor Godaigo bestowed both crests upon the head of the Ashikaga clan. With that the bestowing of the Paulownia motif was also an Ashikaga prerogative which they used to reward loyalty. The recipient clans wore it as a symbol of "legitimacy and power." In the 16th century, Hideyoshi, who was born a commoner, after adopting it as his own crest also gave out the motif to some of his most loyal supporters. By the late feudal period nearly 20% of the warrior class wore it as their own personal crest.

Farmers once planted kiri trees upon the birth of a daughter because it was so fast growing that by the time she was ready to marry the tree could be cut down and made into a tansu or chest.

"The name kiri came from the kiru (to cut) as it was believed that the tree would grow better and quicker when it was cut down often." It can grow to more than 30' in height and has fragrant purplish blossoms in April or May.

phoenix & Paulownia - ho-o kiri
The phoenix, ho-o, is the bird of immortality in the east as in the west, but in Asia its immortality is gained from sipping dew from the flowers of the Paulownia, kiri, tree.  Thus this bird, which is represented as having attributes of a peacock, a quail, or even sometimes an owl, is usually seen with Paulownia leaves and flowers, the latter being held upright as on the tsutsugaki futon covers, appearing when there are leaves on the tree.  The phoenix and Paulownia were probably most often used for marriage quilts, though there is a question of whether or not the peacock-tailed bird on the child's futon cover in our Tsutsugaki section isn't in fact a young phoenix.
